Yep you've nailed it. I can see myself picking up TW3 in five years and playing it again. That's rare for a game anymore. It's also one of the only games where I've taken to literally just walking everywhere. I don't fast travel, I don't ride Roach any faster than at a walk, I don't even push the stick all the way forward when on foot. The game is just so beautiful and detailed--I don't think any game I've ever played feels more real and "alive" than TW3 does, and I really just love being in that world.

If you haven't ever played it, give The Witcher 2 a try. It's not open world, but it's still a very fun game and is likewise incredibly detailed and has a way of really pulling me into the world. You can see the rough edges a bit more, but it's well worth playing, especially if you enjoy the world, characters, and story of The Witcher universe. I played TW3 first, too, and just needed more of that universe.
