I’m genuinely curious as to why this had to be done. Dark Below didn’t lock you out of Hard mode VoG.

Hard mode VoG was also obsolete for progression when Dark Below came out. And the redone Heroics for all the old raids require Rise of Iron in Destiny 1.

I'm gonna guess it's either a raid stays in the latest progression but it gets DLC-required as part of keeping it around, or a raid becomes obsolete to play for progression and everyone can play it.. but good luck finding anyone that wants to?

By the end of D1, a raid was both. You could pick vanilla normal mode, vanilla hard mode, or current xpac tier hard mode. IN D2, it's a step backwards, apparently.

It kind of gives me the feeling that Bungie doesn't think the Raid Lair will be enough for the endgame, or else they wouldn't mind people moving on from Leviathan.

Well, a large complaint was raids becoming obsolete in Destiny 1, even though I was used to it from other MMO-type games.

So maybe it's figured on the spreadsheets that the labor cost of sustaining the HM raid continually gets paid for with expansion dollars.

This is me just armchairing - I completely understand people not wanting to pay to play the hard mode of a launch raid, but keeping raids relevant to the endgame means continual labor to keep them sustained. I don't think Bungie is doing this just to spite people into buying the expansions.
