Cross Gen is bad (Gaming)

This exact same thing was said last generation, and is said all the time about holding PC gaming back, and it mostly turns out to just not be true.

Ehhhhh the hard drives on PS3 and PS4 were basically the same… there wasn't the generational leap like there was with the SSD. I mean, the PS4 Pro shipped with a 5400 RPM laptop drive…

Better hardware means a better experience. What is now seamless on current hardware can be done on old hardware, just with (more) seams. Cross-gen is fine, it just takes more engineering to make it work on a wider variety of hardware, but the lack of supply of new hardware makes spending the money to support older hardware sensible.
