That tunnel leads to the area in the strike where you have to wait until the thread barrier falls before you move on.

I'm not sure why it was guarded by ???s Maybe Bungie was just setting us a challenge (can you get past them?). Challenge accepted Bungie. I got past them using advanced fleeing and timing my respawns.
