People are quite aware of VAT here. Especially if it changes: a few years ago, it went up from 17.5% to the current 20% rate. People could tell instantly that things were more expensive.
Perhaps so. I still think it's better for taxes to be discrete and explicit, for the same reason financial advisers always tell people to use cash if you want to save money and become more aware of your spending habits.
