Misses the point entirely (Destiny)
COD is and has been based on the traditional deathmatch gameplay. The focus is entirely on multiplayer and the story is a tacked on the side, and by story I mean the PVE modes. COD has some good elements in the PVE modes, and one or two missions are interesting and fun, but overall the focus is entirely on PVP.
COD's progression is iterative and time based. Play long enough and you will get everything even if you are a poor player. Once you reach a certain point, you can reset your progression and stats and get an icon indicating you have done so. Rewards are usually frequent, with a new item every few matches. Skill based awards are usually clothes or icons and have no in game effect.
Destiny has a much more skill based, a PVE and PVP split focus and with more random progression. The iterative portion leaves you with blue gear, and a slower purple gear mechanic. Leveling in Destiny is much slower then COD. Customization is more random, with the RNG giving items that may or may not have the perks you want. In addition the high end gear requires both skill, time and equipment to acquire. The raids are harsh, especially on hard, and a large time investment.
I had friends who are COD stalwarts that tried Destiny, but they don't have the time or skill to invest in the game. They quit at around level 16 on their first characters and went back to COD. It wasn't that they disliked the game, it was mainly they didn't have the time to grind for shards/marks/rep. COD lets them get into the fight at a relatively even level (more or less) right away and they don't have to worry too much about progression.
Sort version, COD is candy out of a vending machine. It is sweet and available any time you have a few coins to rub together. Destiny is a large, delicious cake (filled with the walnuts of RNG despair) that costs far more and shouldn't be wolfed down in a few bites.
