The queen's wrath missions were kind of like this. (Destiny)

You were just hunting down Fallen in that particular event, but the high level retread of some of those story missions was honestly pretty fun; I don't know why everybody was so down on that event. At least it was different. The idea of higher level retreads of story missions for XP and legendary items is welcome to me.

I imagine we'll probably see QW again right before HoW, similar to how we started seeing the Blades on Earth and the Moon.

QW was just weird.

You're given a token that allows you to start a one of a pool of story missions with pre-set burns- Problem is, the mission is randomly selected when you launch, and would range from absurdly easy (Restoration) to absurdly difficult (Eye of the gate lord/Black Garden with Solar burn), so you could just orbit and try again for a new mission if you wanted.

I think people's main beef was the reward system- Apparently, ascendant shards are supposed to be hard to get (LOL), so Bungie quickly posted a hotfix that prevented you from gaining those when breaking down the reward gear. So if you already had legendary armour in those slots, you were effectively getting NOTHING for doing these missions regularly. You could get lucky and snag a Sniper rifle or ship, but the odds for those to drop were way really low. I did ~60 of those missions, and I only got two of the sniper rifles.

As I write this post, it's become apparent that Destiny, specifically, is just too loot-driven for a lot of people- myself included- for casual challenges like this to seem appealing. Once we start using that loot as motivation, We NEED some carrot on the end of that stick, or we just won't bother. For me personally, the only exception to this is running the Vault of Glass.
