Werther's is a German candy from a long time ago, but it wasn't introduced into the international market until the nineties, despite advertisement showing elderly folk giving their grandchildren the candy they supposedly had when they were a kid appearing immediately.

Unfortunately, this is necessarily false. Even if the grandfather was German, he would have been the age of the kid during the wars and depression, and the candy had stopped manufacturing during this time. And he is clearly not German.

That said, due to these commercials, Werther's Originals has been associated with old people in both the UK and the US despite being newer to these countries than Diet Mountain Dew.
