People who log in everyday always earned marks faster, because they were playing the game more. How is this any different?

Because, if you are playing to progress and get marks and gear, not all time spent is the same.

Consider you have two hours to play Destiny every week. If you spend those two hours over two days, you get more than if you spend 2 hours in one day.
