I hate sunstrike (Destiny)

I still haven't finished the Sunbreaker quest line because it's almost impossible to get a kill with sunstrike. I must be doing something wrong? If I get in melee range of anyone except another Titan, they hit me before I can hit them, then finish me off with their second melee and walk away unscathed. A sunstrike punch only ever kills someone if they already took damage from somewhere (or maybe if they have low armor).
This last line - yes. But one or two MIDA bullets, followed up by a Sunstrike, means death.
