20 reasons to be excited for TTK (Destiny)

There's a lot of good stuff in here, but this part made me wonder:

“Weapons, armor, class items, and even your Ghost shell all offer perk customization as well as increased power and light for your hero.”

Emphasis mine. We've already heard that leveling in TTK will no longer be a function of your armor. However, this sentence suggests that light will still be a thing in some way - so, I wonder what it does now? Increase overall damage (or damage resistance?), speed up cooldowns? Some other mechanic that we don't even know about yet?
