Balancing the economy is no easier in a game without trading, but I sure see the point of making it a goal less. Especially since "inflation" leads to accessibility and therefore the possibility of pvp balance increases. I have to assume that the goal is not economic "balance" but suppression of "wealth" to incentivize further "labor". Which sounds a lot more sinister than "want to keep giving you a reason to play the game".
