instead of going orbit, you should be able to open up the director in-world, and choose your next destination. Then, it would automatically take you to orbit (loading screen).
Also, quests should be able to be advanced without going back to the Tower (or whatever takes it's place in D2). I could kinda see going back for the last step, but every other step should just naturally happen, through radio coms or something. Maybe have a safe zone in each patrol zone that you can communicate back to the tower.
