I think it's effective for them to do this, but as others have noted, this isn't new for them.

We've heard "we've missed the mark" from them quite a few times now, but the thing that is always missing is any sort of explanation as to their thought process behind why they thought something was going to work when it didn't.

But didn't it actually work for the target audience? Marathon had great reviews and the people who stuck around really love it. By all accounts the feel and gunplay is fantastic. It seems like for the genre they made it was good actually.

The problem was that they spent too much money. If they made Marathon for 10 million, it would have been absolutely fine.

This is why there are so many horror films even though it's kind of a niche genre. They just don't spend a lot making them, so your audience doesn't have to be huge. If you spent 200 million on a horror film and it flopped, the mark you missed was not in the filmmaking necessarily, but in calibrating for the size of your audience.
