Whether Destiny will work well for casual sessions as a random is a question that might take some time to answer. At the very least, the core story missions seems like they'll be decent enough in single-player play; a buy would be unlikely to be a total waste unless you totally hate the core gameplay...

But a lot of Destiny's content (strikes and the raid) seem to be strongly built around coordinated team action. Strike matchmaking was alright in the alpha and beta, but more accessible voice communication would have made it much better. And of course you'll absolutely need to go in as a group to do the raid.

We really have to see how it plays at higher levels, and how the game's systems work out, to give a good answer.
