In my usual raid group we refer to that as "Pulling a Kevin". I'm not sure how he does it, but EVERY TIME we raid, nightfall, etc.. he is out of primary, and he doesn't have a Mythoclast yet.

The only pre DLC hand cannon that can one shot lvl 30 Goblins in the Vault is the Hawkmoon. That means you're using twice as much ammo on hard vs normal. It's possible if you don't get good ammo drops, but primary synth are super cheap.

I don't have too much problem with the Mythoclast overall, but maybe it's because I have ammo perks that let me carry ~250 shots. Sometimes I need to pop a synth if I'm on a totem.
