I believe that people have found that they can open the door by popping their ghost next to it. I doubt Bungie intended that to be the way to get to a chest though.

nope, once Atheon spawns, you cannot open the door. while dealing with the gatekeeper, it will open again just by standing near it.

we've had people stay out in the jump puzzle to watch the broken gate while the rest tackled atheon, nothing ever happened.

we've also explored both time gates after atheon's death and haven't been able to find anything before going blind.

There is a hidden room in the jump puzzle way down below the ledge to the second puzzle. (the drop down after that left hand tunnel that leads to the second jump puzzle). if there were going to be a chest anywhere, i would guess there or the broken gate.
