Every time we (always a different group) beat him, a couple of the regulars I play with insist on staying until the timer eventually kicks us out to a reward screen and then to orbit. It takes about 5 minutes or so, I'd vaguely guess. They do it for tea-leaf reasons, believing that manually leaving may prevent a late-spawning exotic or something from being rewarded.

I've never seen us get kicked to a reward screen and orbit on VoG, no matter how long we waited.
