Radar is your friend (Destiny)

Like beard was saying watch your radar but know what lies in that direction. Watch choke points, doorways anyplace that grants you the first shot on the enemy. Also when they stay bunched up know where the flank points are and how to pop in whack a few and bugger out. Avoid being out in te open, or if you find you have to run across some long sight lines switch to a primary that will help with those. I found maps like burning shrine and anomaly are very conducive to shotty work as they have Tighter play spaces.
