Sure, the Skolas fight can take an hour. Or it can take 10 minutes. With such a difficult fight, you can never be sure exactly how it is going to go. And that can be part of the fun. Unfortunately, this also applies to the rounds leading up to Skolas. Depending on your group and how experienced you all are, you might easily spend an hour + on the wave before Skolas. Or even the one before that. So a level 35 PoE run might only take some groups an hour, but it can easily take other groups 4 or 5 hours. Personally, I find that a bit too punishing to not have checkpoints.
