No, that's a very strong counterexample to the issue of vested versus unvested benefits. If someone leaves a company in the middle of a pay cycle, the company would have a pretty hard time using the "they don't work here anymore" defense when explaining why they haven't paid for hours worked prior to the termination of employment.

Vesting is a weird thing, it's done under the pretense of rewarding loyalty, but can be broken for other reasons.
