I've done this this way, staying left, and consistently hit the enrage timer.

Sounds like the sword carrier isn't doing enough damage. Are they level 31? Are you making orbs? Getting in enough hits? If everything goes well, you can kill Crota before the 2nd ogres. If not, usually as 'enrage is near' hits.
