-I miss matching elemental types actually making a difference.

It's still pretty useful. That shield burst you get when you take one down with a matching element does quite a bit of damage. I always target the shielded enemy first now, if I've got a matching elemental weapon. It's often enough to take down a handful of unshielded enemies nearby. I've even had the explosion chain to another shielded enemy and cause their shield to burst as well.
