Gambit is hard solo queue (Destiny)

All my Gambit games so far have been solo. I've had quite an even mix of good and bad games. Definitely seen instances of people going AWOL when they should be gathering motes.
I also see people hiding from invaders when they have no motes to lose but also the opposite; taking the invader on when carrying lots of motes.
Haven't quite figured out the best way to play solo, when to use my super for instance. Or when to bank. I've been favouring banking for small and medium blockers but what seems to work well one game can fail miserably the next.
