You could just turn on subtitles if you don't want to miss the dialogue.

That's a hit on immersion for me. A small one, but still a hit. For instance, I've been looking for a Last of Us walkthrough without commentary and without subtitles to share with a non-gaming friend. Tough to find. On the other hand, given how game sound location is dynamic, it's probably a necessary evil. I've always turned it off during first playthroughs, though.
