Bounties not working? (Destiny)

Last night I thought I was going after two bounties, and neither worked. One was for a mission on Mars, but it's possible I chose the wrong one. Then I went after Askor on Venus, and I made sure that was right one. Didn't get either bounty. Maybe there's a common mistake I'm making?

Also, is there a good site that explains Destiny better? I want simple things like how difficulty selections adjust based on rank. I've got friends IRL I play with who don't have much patience or time for the details, who understand less than I do, and I can sense they're getting frustrated.

For instance, they've heard about the Queen's missions and they're excited because they can get legendary stuff! They don't really understand what legendary stuff is yet (I barely do). They're level 20 and under, and I'm trying to explain to them that they can't even play the Queen's missions yet. I barely qualify at level 21.

I've also had to tell them about 100 times that they won't be playing a raid for a good while.
