Whether it's bounties or challenges or achievements/trophies, rewards for performing certain tasks in MP influence the way other people play, often to the detriment of other players' experiences. One of the oldest examples I have experience with is the original Gears of War. It was almost impossible to get any cooperation because everyone else was busy trying to grind their "Get 100 curbstomps/chainsaw kills/pistol headshots/whatever" achievements. Actually winning or acting as a team was rarely a consideration. They didn't have those kind of achievements in Gears 2, and it resulted in a better experience.

Remember, in multiplayer you're not just on your own time. You're on everyone else's time, too.
