Changing up your weapons may not help in certain situations. I can see people holding a corner with a long sight line and disengaging if you get close.

The point is that sneaking close will be difficult in most respects. By moving to engage you put yourself at a disadvantage, both in revealing your position and by moving through your opponent's chosen ground. Shorter range weapons make it easier for opponents to castle in position and corner camp with longer range weapons. By coordinating fire they should be able to knock down one or two people charging, and if they lose one in exchange they are in a better position to res them.

I don't think we're necessarily disagreeing.

I thought the ToO stream was a good demonstration of a destiny match. Engagements varied widely in distance, from close to far. On the whole, I don't think there are a great deal of sight lines in Destiny. What there are a great deal of are choke points; and at choke points, you have a wide variance of distance to engage at. Understanding which weapon your opponent has doesn't just dictate your weapon, certainly. It also dictates how close to a choke point you want to engage.

Walking through choke points is what you should avoid doing.
