It does seem like a missed opportunity. (Destiny)
The infinite forest seems like it would be a fun way to incrementally add different stuff.
Test out mechanics, add a basket ball court, or a court of oryx style boss rush, do different activities and the like.
It does seem like a lot of effort on map design for something you will see perhaps 2 hours of, at most.
