To have fun? (Destiny)
I think he means that having limited time events that don’t actually change anything about the game besides the gear you’re earning (Iron Banner, Faction Rally) isn’t exactly fun. Lots of players don’t like the current Crucible, and adding some slightly different gear to the loot pool for a week isn’t going to change that. Something like Mayhem certainly did and was tons of fun. I don’t particularly like doubles, but at least it’s a change of pace. Limited time loot tables isn’t fun or interesting and actually feels incredibly lazy.
I would totally understand his feelings if the event wasn't free. But I also didn't hear him say anything about The Dawning?I don't particularly like crucible either, but I feel like people are complaining (might not be the best word but it's all I got) more about special events that happened in D1 and now are happening in D2 just because it's D2.
I mean what do people want from Bungie? More content that you can play and do stuff with? That's called a DLC and it's already slated to come out. Until then, have fun with these mini events or don't and have fun someplace else. But don't question the events meaning. I'm going to enjoy the event for what I get out of it. I suggest y'all do the same. And if you get nothing out of it then go someplace else to have fun.
P.S. I'm sorry if this seems a bit in your face, but I'm started to get sick of Bungie Bashers. I want to just have fun with Destiny for what it is: Fun, glorious, the faults and everything in between.
To me, it’s just kinda a symptom of what some of us see as a larger issue; An in-game “event” that actually isn’t an event at all, just more eververse stuff we can buy (or not). The entire point of special events in a game like Destiny is to give players something to get excited about and/or a fun reason to come back to the game. When an event consists of nothing but Eververse loot, that tells me that Bungie thinks and/or wants Eververse to be the thing we’re excited about.
I do have fun with these events. I'm sorry you don't have fun with these events. I'm also sorry you don't see the events the way I see them. I'm saying this with all seriousness.
And I’m glad you enjoy them, just as I’m glad that you post here to share your thoughts about them :)
Also, I know I’ve said this before, but the whole “what do you expect for a free event” argument needs to just stop. That’s a line of thought that can be used to justify anything. I want good content. If that means waiting longer and paying for it when it arrives, that’s totally cool! But work IS going into this event. Bungie is devoting resources to it. They’re going to promote it and hype it and all that.
So you are saying that If we got rid of all these events, and when I say all, I mean ALL. Because there is a team that does all the live events, that includes SRL. If we got rid of them and just throw those people into making the next DLC, the DLC will come out better? I mean, I'm sure it will improve the quality by a little bit, but I'd far rather have a team that does live events to spend their time entertaining me until the DLC comes out.
There are so many different ways that could go, really. With Curse of Osiris being so anemic, part of me thinks the DLC teams could use some help. On the other hand, I totally like the concept of a Live team producing a steady trickle of new content to fill the gaps between major expansions... I just wish it was actual GAMEPLAY content, and not just some new Eververse loot and some decorations in the tower (not that I don’t appreciate the decorations).
Just as an example, I’ve been playing a bunch of AC Origins this past week, and they have these special limited-time events that occur every few weeks. A super high-level boss appears in the world, with unique new loot as a reward for beating it. The game has only been out for like 6 weeks, and they’ve already had 2 or 3 of these things, not to mention the special daily quests hidden around the world, a complete DLC release coming very soon, etc.
I don’t know the development details, but I suspect this content was mostly if not completely finished during main development. But at the end of the day, I don’t care about that. They’ve taken aim at a similar goal to what Bungie is trying to do with Destiny; creating a living, breathing world where there’s constantly fun and new reasons to jump back in. But Ubisoft is doing it with actual gameplay activities, while Bungie’s live team seems to focus on selling new loot rather than providing new experiences.
It disappoints me to see that kind of buildup and hype around something that is so far away from what the community actually wants, or the game actually needs.
One person shouldn't speak for the community as to their wants and needs. You are welcome to tell this community what you want out of Destiny, but please don't speak for the community. I am part of this community and I want this. I am not so brash as to say that Destiny needs anything. Yes, there are things that would improve it in my mind, but that is personal preference to a game that I want to play.
Everything I say is couched within the context of “my personal opinion”. I don’t claim to speak for the greater community, but I do have opinions on what would be better for the game and/or the community at large. They’re obviously nothing more than my own opinions, but I always do my best to back those opinions up with reasonable arguments, for whatever that’s worth. In this particular case, my argument is that *if* Bungie wants to use a steady drip of new content to keep people coming back, then good new GAMEPLAY content would be a far more effective way of achieving that goal than an Event built around Eververse items. That week before they nerfed Prometheus Lense generated more in-game excitement and good vibes within the community than any Live Team event ever has, with the possible exception of SRL, in my estimation.
I’m all for saying “Destiny 2 is what it is... either enjoy it for what it is or play something else.” I think that’s a great way to approach any game, really. But Bungie doesn’t approach the game that way... at least they say they don’t.
And they shouldn't! They are developers, their job is to create a game they want to play and will make money. Yes, that in a way includes making people like their game, but it's not all inclusive.
So in the spirit of constructive criticism, any time Bungie does an Eververse-driven event like this, I will respectfully say that as a fan of Destiny and a fan of Bungie, I think this kind of content does more harm than good and falls far short of what I expect from a studio like Bungie.
And I respect that. I personally enjoy these events. I can't say that if there were no events that the overall future content would be better. Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't. I don't know if I want to give up these events to see if it would be better though.
I totally hear where you’re coming from in terms of not wanting to lose something that you enjoy, but do you really enjoy these events so much that you prefer them over new strikes, new quests, new PvP modes, or other completely new activities? Would new playable content mean less to you than new shaders and sparrows?
But beyond that question, it really shouldn’t come down to “either/or”. Titanfall 2 provided a steady stream of FREE updates for more than a year. Each update included new maps, new game modes, new weapons, balance tweaks (with more tweaks happening constantly between content releases), AS WELL AS optional cosmetic items available through Microtransactions. They used Microtransactions to find the development of new gameplay content, rather than using Microtransactions to fund the creation of new Microtransactions, which from the outside appears to be about 90% of what the Live Team is up to.
* For the record, I’m fully prepared to eat crow on all of this if it turns out that there’s more to this event than we currently know.
