That's a theory, but it doesn't bear out in practice, at least not on a launch XBox. My load times on all games got noticeably better when I went to an external hard drive, and others I spoke with had similar experiences. The general consensus is that the internal drive that came in those things is butt slow. It's possible later revisions or the X have faster hardware, can't confirm though. But it should not be automatically assumed that anything external is a hindrance.

Most of the drives are 2.5" 5400rpm, which are indeed butt slow, often with bad seek times as well. I'd guess just going to a 3.5" external would speed things up despite the connection.
