I dunno… you make it sound like the only solution to ensuring good readability is to throw your hands up and run home to momma, but there's a whole profession surrounding this stuff, though. Bungie have done pretty well with this overall, I'd say (particularly when you look at all the companies that still think it's acceptable to use Arial as a UI font), but that's part of why people hold Bungie to such a high standard: they're usually pretty good at this stuff.
