Exotic gear also requires exotic shards now... (Destiny)

... at least according to the companion app. The description says these can be acquired by dismantling other exotic gear -- no mention of dismantling weapons.

Does this mean there are two favors of exotic shards (one for weapons and one for gear), and they're not interchangeable?
