I can't believe you did not mention Halo 5 when it came to misleading marketing driving pre sales.

If you recall, it was after the beta and before launch that Deej announced that there was only one patrol space per planet - four total. I remember that being received with much apprehension, since up to that point the marketing and even Bungie themselves were talking about the game in a way that made it seem much bigger. And when everybody saw the result, I think a lot of people felt misled.

Des2ny's marketing is very conservative in that regard. Right now the only thing I'm expecting is a game with a better story and new raid. I think they have learned their lesson. There is less hype and excitement, but it will ultimately be better as we discover everything about Des2ny not knowing what to expect.

I guarantee you that pre order exotic isn't super good. If something like old Hawkmoon were preorder only, there'd be a shit fit in the community.

Also Activision does indeed have a limited amount of control over game design, and while Marty leaving was due to many factors, it jump started when Activision marketing decided Music of the Spheres wasn't a good way to promote the game. Looking back it's hard to say if Activision was really the best choice or not.
