I noticed this as well, though I wrote it off as me being more comfortable with the dialogue.

Failsafe is my favorite new character hands down. Followed by Hawthorne, though she is also a little one-dimensional.

Might even be my favorite character in general. Zavala is the law, Ikora gets the useless bellybutton lint award, and cayde sadly has become the stupid clown.

I miss competent, self-directed NPCs a bit. Mara/Petra/Variks had a bunch of that, as did eris. I can't imagine we are done seeing them.
