I was about to agree with you about magic, but then I realized that I love Harry Potter. But the magic isn't really the point. It's a means to an end, the end being a great story and true, sincere characters. I do know that there are a lot of times when the mythology gets in the way of that and the author/developer/whatever thinks that worldbuilding is the end of a story rather than the beginning. That's the thing I don't like.

I can easily buy something very unusual and outlandish about the world you're setting your story in. But give me a reason to. If Destiny is full of ancient mythology and gods and junk that I typically have no interest in at all, I will care if it has a cathartic point. I absolutely won't care if it's just there for the sake of "worldbuilding".

That's where I draw the line, anyway.
