That would mean I would have to exploit level load zones to get a decent chance at drops... Not just me, of course, but anyone who doesn't know the right trick. All of them get less reward because some have figured out an exploit?

That's a good point. I guess I'm coming at it from the perspective of the load zone trick making the experience significantly more fun. Others may disagree but I think it is a fantastic gameplay mechanic.

Bungie could formalize the trick by spawning a waypoint at the load zone after the chest has been opened. Call that way point "Reactivate fount" or something, and rename the "Ether Chest" to "Ether Fount". Then the player has to go to the load zone to "reactive" the fount which continues to pour out treasure. It could use some polish, but I definitely think it is possible.
