On the nature of the Darkness (Destiny)

I think the darkness is a singular thing, like the Traveler. "IT is alone" - Rasputin.

But IT has supplicants, proxies, like the Hive (oh reader mine), that take care of lesser foes and expand the rate at which it can eliminate life in the universe without being a direct threat, as the hive don't know how anything works. They just know if they follow the correct rituals they will get the desired result.

So even if the Darkness is active from the start, it would take a long time to travel from system to system and eliminate all the races.
