Why have both? (Destiny)

One of the really good things Bungie did with their exotic upgrade revamp was removing the requirement for ascendant shards or energy in exotic armour and weapons upgrades, and instead the final upgrade for each class of items is unified as an exotic shard.

Looking through the database, it's clear that they had unique items in place for each at one point (see here and here), but common sense prevailed and everyone is happier for it.
