There's a story on how Billie Jean went through dozens of mixes, but mix #2 was ultimately the one that "shipped."
Do you go through a lot of mixes before a tune is considered done?
A: Yes, almost always. It's much worse now in the digital age than during the analog era. Doing a "final mix" used to mean something when it was impossible to perfectly re-perform the mix multiple times. Now I have files with the name "final final mix 08".
And it turns out the one we shipped is "final FINAL mix 06".
