Not supposed to be exclusive... (Destiny)
Oi... I hear you... and I was kind of conflicted about putting the feature in at all, but in the end I decided that the utility of it was the important element. Please believe me, though, that "exclusivity" was not one of the design concepts here.
The main motivator was that sometimes I set up events out-of-channel (text messages, or even during another event), and if we have a full roster already, there's no need to look for other players. It's nice to have the event listed on the FTB, though, so that you can see all of your events at at glance (and have those nice green boxes for the ones you're signed up for). If we set up a normal event, though, and someone forgets to RSVP right away (or if they don't have Internet access for a while), then there's a potentially awkward situation where someone else may sign up for that last spot, only to be told, "Sorry, that spot was already taken!" And that doesn't feel good for anyone involved.
With a private event, however, the creator can just send the link around and folks can sign-up at their leisure. Easy peasy. And if you're just blocking out time for yourself, you can make a private event that only you can see, and keep it as a reminder on the FTB.

Extra credit reading:
I like having all of my Destiny events scheduled on the FTB -- it's a consistent location for me to keep track of events and I like seeing the green boxes as reminders about the events I'm signed-up for.
With that in mind, what if you RSVP'd me for an event because we set it up last time we were playing together? That event doesn't show up on my calendar unless I remember to go in and add my own RSVP, and then you'd have to delete the RSVP you made for me. It's a messy, inconsistent, and potentially confusing user experience. I'm not particularly proud of it, and the only reason it hasn't been fixed yet is that for 90% of the time, it still "just works."
The way to fix this immediately is to match RSVPs based on forum display name rather than forum account ID number, but then if someone uses a different forum name than their Gamertag/PSN ID, then things get really out of sync.
What I need to do (and this is a while away due to real-life time constraints) is to make it so that everyone is able to link their Bungie.net ID to their DBO profile. That will allow folks to pull in their Gamertags/PSN IDs. And then when you RSVP for me, you'd be able to attach the RSVP to my Bungie.net profile and everything would sync-up smoothly. It's not a simple change, but it's where I want to go with this.
