As a programmer I agree. But I believe it is a pressing need. This came up in D1, so clearly it's not an unknown problem. As uno pointed out, I keep the guns for Collections, incase they become the meta.

I also keep guns because I just like a variety in my play style. If you see me in crucible, I am almost always rocking something new. It makes it more fun.

Outfits I keep because I like the look of more than 1.

My Vault is covered in Shaders that I have 150 of that I will never use. But deleting 150 of them takes like 10 minutes of gameplay. it's just not worth my time. This one, yes is on me. But also on them for not having a better way to get the shader.
