Someone I play with regularly does the pocket infinity thing (Destiny)

I don't remember who it is. Might be Squid or unoudid. Works damn good. As for my self revives, I just do them as soon as I think I won't die and a teammate isn't near me. End of round self revives are generally not going to work, for the reason you said.

I've run Pocket Infinity quite a bit, it's still one of my go-to weapons in Crucible. I haven't used it the past 2 or 3 Trials though since I've been finding more success sniping. Pocket Infinity is great for melting radiance Warlocks, and I've caught a Golden Gunslinger off guard once or twice. However, its Achilles heel is blink-shotgun: it's just impossible to get the timing right.
