Bungie using stolen art in Marathon (Destiny)
Paul Tassi says Marathon is dead in the water. I think he wants clicks. To the extent that YouTubers now control the narrative, he might be right. Thoughts?
It's always popular to hate on the giant winner. Streamers will obviously make the "GG BUGNIE K BYE" video because it will get more clicks than "Let's consider the positive"
The stolen art thing sucks. For everyone. As a graphic designer myself, I can't imagine the feelings of seeing my work stolen on that level.
But if we want to play devils advocate (not defending anyone...just saying)...
Many times, when designing work for people, they often don't know what they want, so I tell them "find some examples that you like and send those to me" I will then use those files to inspire the aesthetic of the work I create. Never would I use elements of those examples, but inspiration is always drawn from something.
I can also tell you, there is enough of my work in the wild (on a local level) that there are times I will see something and think "...did I make that?"
So regarding the artist that stole the work, let's assume their actions are somewhere between:

1 - Bad memory and file keeping leads to a major oopsie.
We don't know what happened. We just know it happened.
Based on the words I've seen from Bungie, it seems like they want to do right by the artist.
What this may be? We may never know. An up-front settlement and percentage of profits would sound good to me.
With all the bad press around Bungie, there are still a lot of people there making the game and I have to imagine they want to make a game that makes us happy. Were I the one utilizing my talents to create something I was proud of...and everyone just shat all over it?? I would be preeeettty heartbroken.
All things considered - I'm still keeping a positive eye on Marathon. Playing the Alpha turned me around from the announcement stuff.
At the end of the day, I'm willing to bet that all the streamers and haters will be throwing their money at the screen day one to play Marathon.
