It was based on a controller built for Japanese-sized hands.
When I say "claw," I'm referring to how people use the sticks which the shape of the controller was very obviously not designed around using. The handles work okay with the basic d-pad and face buttons (they were the first addition, the initial differentiator from the SNES controller; elegance was easier when the design was very simple), but they're questionable for the triggers and analogue sticks.
It was built for Japanese-sized hands. But it has a lot of actual design problems.
Remember how Microsoft had to release a special version of the original Xbox controller for the Japanese market because the Duke controller was just too big for them?
Oh, you mean that Duke that almost everyone in the US hated as well?
