After Bungie fought so hard to become independent from Microsoft in 2007 and subsequently partnered with Activision in a deal structured to retain their ownership and control of the Destiny IP, this seems kind of strange.
Sony is a good fit for them, though, and I have high hopes that this will support the long-term development of the Destiny franchise.
I am guessing this could be about reaching out into other media.

People from the media industry joining on the board… I wonder if this isn't a way for Sony to help make Bungie's IP into TV and movies. There seems to be a mini renaissance of that lately, and even a few adaptations recently that have managed to be good.
