One theory: an arms race (Destiny)

This was my immediate reaction, i.e. a hostage for Sony to make sure Call of Duty stays multiplatform after Microsoft bought Activision. That felt a bit cynical, but the game industry is wild these days.

I didn't think Bungie would be up for sale after making such a big deal about going independent, and I assumed they were doing fine financially. I guess the studio has big ideas that need bigger funding, and it sounds like the buyout has specific assurances of creative freedom.

Maybe in another 20 years Nintendo will get their turn.

Wouldn't be surprised..

Sidenote: Nintendo's target has and always well be Namco. They actually attempted to acquire them before but Japan's government blocked them from finalizing the deal, so they were only allowed to acquire Monolith as a consolation prize. Bandai was allowed to merge later with Namco.
