* It's the exact HBO logo inside the white sphere

It's not the HBO logo; it's the bungie.org logo.

* It's too detailed for a small version (it's more like a high-res presentation logo variant)

The cityscape certainly has too much granularity for smaller sizes as-is, but were it chosen I would produce multiple versions for uses at different scales. This is something I tend to do when creating iconography anyway, to ensure that smaller details align with the pixel grid etc.
