Yeah, I think kapowaz nailed it. I'm wondering if you'd think his design would be more shirt-friendly if it had a weathered effect (specifically for a shirt application, not as a redesign of the logo).

That's pretty easy to do specifically for things like t-shirt printing, wallpapers and the like; it's a lot better to start out with a logo that's and unadorned then create variants for specific purposes than to start with a logo that (for example) has a distressed effect and try and use that in a variety of places. It's hard to create an outline version of a distressed effect that works well at all sizes — once you scale it up crumbling edges appear as unnatural-looking curves and straight lines.

Just take a look at what Bungie (and a lot of others) do with their Merchandise; you can see logos being used plain and simple for things like embroidered patches, or with a distressed effect once printed larger (which would have been made specifically for that resolution of printing).
