Great expectations (Destiny)

This was my experience as well.

Add to it the adverts with in-game-engine scenes that end up not being part of the game at all ("out here in the wild, this is how we talk") and several statements along the lines of "your gear will tell your story. If people see you have gun X, they know you went to place Y and killed boss Z." Which turns out to have been true in some cases and false in others. You only get a Mythoclast from killing Aetheon, but the statement makes it sound like everyone who killed Aetheon gets a Mythoclast. Likewise, there are loads of items in the game that just drop from anything, or at the end of a nightfall (any nightfall), with the result being that those weapons tell a super boring story of "finally the RNG gave me this." It feels to me like a struggle against probability and game mechanics, as opposed to alien servants of a mysterious darkness.

Without the hype, I absolutely would have enjoyed the game more. That makes me pretty sad to think about. Apparently I'm susceptible to advertising.
